The US Male, one of James' first paintings, won top prize in Southern Illinois University's 1st Undergraduate Art Show. It was a purchase prize offered by the school's Student Center and now hangs at the south entrance to that facility.

The same subject painted several years later.

 The piece reflected the then current Viet Nam War draft sentiment that affected most males over the age of 18.
